Welcome to my first post

I’ve been running High Spirit Therapies with my partner, Jo Simon, for about four years, and I thought it was about time I started blogging about my experiences of running a fledgling business. I will try to be as candid as possible about the many ups and downs we’ve experienced along the way, and perhaps be a source of inspiration and help for those who are attempting the same thing.

To give you a bit of background, Jo is a Clinical Massage Therapist, and she quit her job about 5 years ago to take her passion further. One of the first challenges of being self-employed is to suddenly have control over your income. When you have a job, you are pretty much guaranteed a certain amount of money at the end of the month, even if you think it isn’t enough. For those who go it alone, that certainty goes out of the window, which is both a liberating and scary experience.

From that point on, we developed High Spirit Therapies, a business that would promote holistic health and well-being As well as Jo offering a variety of massage treatments, we developed a range of herbal teas (my passion) and natural skincare (Jo’s passion).

Three years on, we find ourselves trading regularly at Hampstead Market, selling at various related events and facilitating workshops covering topics such as meditation (another of my passions) and making your own skincare.

As the blog progresses, I’ll be sharing my experiences of trading at events, running a market stall and my hopes for the business. I’ll also be posting about the various challenges we faced in marketing our business, from creating leaflets and branding through to the vagaries of of using the internet. You’ll read about the exciting, creative energy of it all, but also of the long hours, the various frustrations and the education you get when things don’t always work out.
Of course, I hope this blog will also act as a forum for anyone out there who wishes to share their own experiences, so feel free to comment below.

Anyway, to get me started here are a few photo’s from stalls we’ve been running at various events and markets over the years.
